22nd Legislative District in Oneida County still an unprecedented tie

Dave Dellecese

A tight race in the county legislator remains up in the air as of early Monday afternoon.

Members of the 22nd Legislative District in Oneida County are still waiting to find out who will represent them in the county legislature. Democrat Shannon Scott and Republican Howard Welch are both vying for the seat.

All that's separating either candidate from a win are three military votes. The deadline for those votes to come in is today.

Officials with the Oneida County Board of Elections said that none of the three votes in question came in their regular mail this afternoon. But they say they are not calling the race a tie just yet...in case any were sent special delivery.

If the military absentee ballots do not come in, and at this point it seems likely they will not, the Board of Elections said they will have to review the County Charters to see who or what would provide a tie-breaking vote...as this is uncharted territory.

We always hear the phrase "Every vote counts." It's not often that we see that theory in play so clearly.
