Enviornmental & Economic impact of Power Line

By MEGAN KOSKOVICH

Friday morning, NYRI submitted its "supplemental filing" to the New York State Public Service Commission.

Within the filing, it outlines the environmental and economic impact of NYRI's proposed transmission lines. So what does those oppose to this project think of this?

We'll get to local reaction in just a bit.

First, we'll break down for you exactly what was submitted by NYRI to the Public Service Commission - otherwise known as the PSC.

In the supplemental filing, which is one step toward NYRI's bid for approval to build the powerlines, NYRI outlined the economic benefits the 190 mile long powerline would provide to New York State - saying it would reduce electricity costs for all New York ressidents - which is different than what it originally stated.

However, Terry Dote, a member of the Upstate Citizens Alliance, says he believes that Mohawk Valley residents will see an increase in their electric bills, regardless of what NYRI states in their filing.

And independent studies cited in the filing also claim that NYRI's project would help New York with its goal toward renewable energy.

The price tag on this project has now jumped to more than $2billion, partly due to the cost of burying the powerlines as opposed to having them exposed.

Terry Dote says he doesn't believe that these claims are going to benefit anyone who will be seeing the powerlines in their backyard or in their town or village.

He and his group, as well as other groups formed to battle the powerlines, will still stand firm.

"I think we've made more of an impact than NYRI ever anticipated that we were going to make," Dote said. "And we are not wavering whether its underground above ground we're still not for this line."

Alternative routes are being considered, should NYRI's proposed route get shot down. This includes installing lines underground in selected areas and bypassing other areas in the original proposal.

Officials with the New York Public Service Commission tell us that they will now be reviewing this supplemental filing. No word on how long that will take.

They will then decide if there are any discrepencies within the report, or if NYRI has been fully compliant.
