DEC: NYRI Application Insufficient (Added 7:00 PM)

Officials with the state Department of Environmental Conservation have some serious concerns about an Albany firm's application to the Public Service Commission to build a power line through central New York. New York Regional Interconnection's application is several hundred pages long and more than a foot high. But the DEC says the voluminous application fails to address numerous issues. The DEC calls the application "significantly deficient," saying NYRI failed to examine alternate routes for the proposed line and that the proposed route has potential to encroach upon state lands. DEC officials say the application should be deemed incomplete.


A spokesperson for the Public Service Commission, which will ultimately decide whether or not the power line can be built, says that the DEC's comments will be taken into consideration like those of any other member of the public. A spokesperson with NYRI did not return our call today. The Albany firm wants to build the power line to carry power to downstate New York beginning in the year 2011.
