Oneidas, opponents differ on Supreme Court ruling

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - Opponents of the Oneida Indian's efforts to put land in upstate New York into federal trust say a decision
Tuesday by the U.S. Supreme Court could doom the request.

The Oneidas, however, say their case is different from the Narragansett tribe and that the nation's top court, in the city of Sherrill case, encouraged the Oneidas to apply for trust land just four years ago.

The Department of Interior has recommended putting 13,000 acres in Madison and Oneida counties into trust, but that decision is being challenged in several federal court lawsuits.

One of those lawsuits, filed by the state of New York and by Madison and Oneida counties, argues that the Oneidas are not eligible for trust land for precisely the same reason the Narragansetts have been denied.
