State agency dismisses power line application

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - State regulators say they have officially
dismissed a company's application to build a 190-mile high-voltage
power line from central New York to the Hudson Valley.

Tuesday's action by the Public Service Commission comes 18 days
after New York Regional Interconnect announced it was suspending
its plans. The company said its decision was in response to a federal agency's March 31 decision to deny one of NYRI's requests.

NYRI planned to build a 1,200-megawatt line from the Utica area south through seven upstate counties to bring power to the New York City area. The project faces intense opposition from environmentalists and local governments.

PSC officials say NYRI must file a new application with the agency if it wants to pursue the project.
