Oneida Nation's liquor licenses denied

Dave Dellecese

NEW YORK CITY - The New York State Liquor Authority disapproved all 6 applications for the Oneida Nation Enterprises to serve alcohol at their golf courses.

Six applications went to vote this morning, including the Shenendoah Clubhouse and Golf Course, the Atunyote Clubhouse and Golf Course, and the Kaluhyat Halfway House and Golf Course.

The "disapproval without prejudice" came across the board this morning from Liquor Authority members, who felt the Oneida's sovereignty issue between the state and federal government was still unsettled.

"The Federal District Court already resvolved the issue and it's not for the state to ignore it," said Mark Emery, Oneida Nation Spokesperson. "It is reservation land."

"I think that it solidifies the point that the Oneida Indian enterprise should be required to pay taxes," said Assemblyman Dave Townsend. "The Liquor Authority is not going to give a license to a place that violates the New York State law."

The Oneida Nation can re-apply if they so choose.
