Feds: 13,000 acres for trust lands
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - The federal Bureau of Indian Affairs says the Oneida Indian Nation should get more than 13,000 acres put into tax-free trust. The official announcement will come in Washington, D.C., where local elected leaders are being briefed by Department of Interior officials. The Syracuse Post-Standard says a notice in the Federal Register shows the preferred trust plan includes the tribe's Turning Stone Casino and Resort complex and the Oneidas' 32-acre territory. The Oneidas had asked for about 17,000 acres to be placed in federal trust, which makes it exempt from state and local taxes and laws, but leaders of Madison and Oneida counties wanted no more than 1,000 acres. The agency must still make a final decision. (Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) |
