Decision on Oneida Indian Land Trust could come second week of May

VERONA - A decision on how much, if any Oneida Nation land is put into trust could come next week.

The Department of Interior was supposed to make a decision by the end of April, but now, Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente says it will be the second week of May before his office hears anything.

The Nation originally asked to have 17,000 acres of land in Oneida and Madison Counties placed into trust.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs recommended 13,000 acres.

Land in trust is not subject to taxation.
