Jury selection in cue ball beating death case

By MEGAN KOSKOVICH

UTICA - Today jurors are being selected to hear the case of two men accused of manslaughter. Carl Hill died from injuries after being beaten to death at a party in Westmoreland in August.

The two men going to trial are Bradley Stanistreet and Kevin Stolarcyk. They are two of four who are charged with manslaughter for fatally beating Hill, of Rome. Both appeared in court today with their lawyers.

Before jury selection could begin, there were some issues that needed to be discussed. One being the idea of having separate trials or separate juries.

The defense felt some of the witnesses admissions for one defendant might hurt the case of the other defendant.

However, Judge Michael Dwyer denied the request for a dual jury trial - so one jury will be hearing both cases.

To give you a quick refresher on the background of this case:

The prosecution says Stanistreet and Stolarcyk were one of many people attending a house party in Westmoreland.

A large fight erupted outside of the home, and that's where the prosecution says the two men started beating Carl Hill. They say the men used everything from baseball bats to a cue ball stuffed into a sock.

Hill was taken to a hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. Two other men charged in connection with this beating - John Almanza and Cory Adam - accepted a plea deal.

Almanza plead guilty to gang assault. Adam plead guilty to manslaughter.

The trial of Stanistreet and Stolarcyk is expected to last through the week - possibly into next week.
