Money missing from Herkimer Police evidence room

By By JOLEEN FERRIS

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Herkimer County District Attorney has asked an outside police agency to investigate what could be an inside job at the Herkimer Police Department.

"I cannot comment on personnel issues. On April 27th, the department became aware that monies were missing from our evidence room. We immediately contacted the Herkimer County District Attorney's office. Speaking with them, we decided an investigation should be done by an outside police agency. The D.A. contacted New York State Police and they are conducting an investigation," says Herkimer Police Chief Joe Malone.

Herkimer County District Attorney John Crandall confirms that the major crimes unit from the New York State Police in Oneida is investigating the missing cash. No one has been charged.

Herkimer's police chief wouldn't comment on whether any members of the department had been suspended pending the investigation.
