Otsego County duo accused of hiding tractor and claiming it stolen
LAURENS, N.Y. (WKTV) - Two Otsego County residents are facing multiple charges - including fraud and grand larceny - after Sheriff's Deputies said the duo hid a tractor and then claimed it to be stolen.
According to the Otsego County Sheriff's Office, Elizabeth Layton, 49, of 2013 County Highway 10 in the Town of Laurens, reported that her Massey Ferguson farm tractor was missing when creditors had come looking for it on January 6, 2010. Sheriff's Deputies said that Layton later provided a written statement to them regarding the theft of the tractor. In late January, authorities said Layton tried to claim the tractor, which is valued at more than $3,000, stolen on her homeowner's insurance policy. During an unrelated burglary investigation in early February, Sheriff's Deputies found that the tractor was in a garage at a farm at 1345 County Route 10 in Laurens. Layton and Edward J. Judd, 32, also of 2013 County Highway 10 , were interviewed at their residence and later at the Otsego County Sheriff's Office, where it was revealed that the duo put the tractor in the barn and never notified the credit company of its location. Both Layton and Judd were charged following the joint investigation between the Otsego County Sheriff's Office Criminal Investigation Division and the New York State Insurance Frauds Bureau's Oneonta office. Judd has been charged with grand larceny and Layton has been charged with grand larceny, insurance fraud, falsely reporting an incident, and making a punishable false written statement. They were both arraigned in Town of Laurens Court and released on their own recognizance. They are scheduled to appear in court on March 11. If convicted, Judd faces up to seven years in prison, and Layton faces up to 14 years of incarceration. Most Popular |
