Skeletal remains found in Oneida identified as Caucasian male, 26-50 years old

ONEIDA, N.Y. (WKTV) - The skeletal remains found in Oneida last Tuesday are that of a male between 26 and 50 years old, the Onondaga County Medical Examiner's Office said, thus ruling out the possibility of the remains being that of one of two young women who had gone missing in 1981 and 1993.

The remains found on Tuesday, April 6, 2010, were located in what authorities are calling "a shallow grave" just north of Canal Road and East of Cowalson Creek in Oneida

At one point, authorities said the skeleton was being compared to dental records of missing local people, including 21 year-old Christine Markey, who disappeared in 1993. Another local woman, 19 year-old Tammy Mahoney, went missing from the area in 1981. Police in the past have searched Oneida Nation land for her remains.

A fisherwoman on Tuesday originally found a skull and a partial hip bone off Canal Road in Oneida. Forensic investigators out of Onondaga County spent Wednesday morning - April 7, 2010 - further excavating the area, sifting through the dirt and by Wednesday afternoon had uncovered a full human skeleton.

Almost one week later, on Monday, April 12, 2010, Oneida Police said the Onondoga County Medical Examiner's Office identified the remains as that of a Caucasian male between 26 to 50 years of age, and said further examination is being conducted. Police said records from missing person cases will continue to be reviewed to try and identify the remains.

The investigation is continuing.
