As Saturday marks one year since Officer Lindsey's death, family still coping

By By SUSAN CAMPBELL

UTICA - One year after Officer Thomas Lindsey was gunned down on patrol, his family and friends are remembering him with a permanent memorial at the site where he was killed.

A cross, constructed Friday will remain on Neilson Street as a reminder of an officer's life cut short. A few family members gathered around the cross Friday preparing for Saturday, which will mark the one year anniversary of Officer Lindsey's death.

Lindsey's step-father - William Schisler says he thinks the cross is a fitting tribute to a man who was raised in Utica and patrolled the streets of the community he loved.

And though Schisler says the cross brings a sense of peace, he says it's still a day-to-day struggle - coping with his stepson's death.

"It gives us a little bit of closure," Schisler said. "But not a lot. We're still trying to deal with the tragedy a year later, and we're still taking it hard."

Family members say they'll be back to the site Saturday morning for a prayer service in honor of Officer Lindsey.

Then Saturday at 6 p.m. there will be a memorial service at Our Lady of Lourdes Church.
