ALBANY - For the second time in two weeks, Utica Police officers made a lengthy road trip to honor fellow Officer Thomas Lindsey, who was killed in the line of duty last year.

Because they had the sad distinction of having lost an officer in the line of duty last year, Utica Police officers took part in a procession and color guard leading to the State of New York Police Officer's Memorial.

It was an impressive sight, at the procession made its way through the streets of Albany. Bagpipers played as Utica Police officers followed them on foot and some on motorcycle.

At the memorial, state dignitaries honored the dead. State Senator Joseph Bruno laid a wreath by the memorial. The names of the seven officers killed in 2007 were read and bagpipers played "Amazing Grace" and then a rifle salute by State Police.

UPD Officer Thomas Lindsey, shot and killed in the line of duty during a traffic stop last year, was among the names added to the wall this year.

It's a day both to mourn and celebrate for those who knew him best.

"Well, you know, it's been a while now...and it's the same," said Sgt. Steven Hauck of the Utica Police. "You feel good about being here, then you see the name on the wall and it makes you a little sad. But the ceremony was nice and it's nice to see people you haven't seen in a while."

Officer Lindsey's is among 1,247 names on the State of New York Police Officers Memorial.
