By By ANDREW DONOVAN

ALBANY, N.Y. (WKTV) - Republican Dierdre "Dede" Scozzafava has dropped out of the race for the 23rd Congressional District and has released her supporters to vote for who they choose

Matt Burns, the campaign spokesperson, said that Scozzafava believes dropping out is in the best interest of the Republican Party.

Scozzafava was in third place according to polls. A Siena College poll found that she has 20% of the support, while her opponents Doug Hoffman and Democratic candidate were too close to call with with 35% and 36%, respectively.

Scozzafava was the clear leader as late as early October. Siena College relased their first poll on October 1 and it showed that Scozzafava had seven point lead over Democrat Bill Owens.

The special election for the Northern New York District is being held Tuesday because the position was opened when nine-term Republican Congressman John McHugh was appointed to position of Secretary of the Army by President Barack Obama.
