CAMDEN, N.Y. (WKTV) - A fiscal conservative is throwing his hat into the 23rd Congressional District ring to challenge freshman Representative Bill Owens.
Watertown businessman Matt Doheny is seeking the Republican, Conservative and Independence lines in his bid to represent the 23rd District.
Doheny grew up in Alexandria Bay. His father was a salesman and traveled throughout the district. His mother was involved in local government.
The Republican Congressional hopeful is running on, what he calls, a common sense platform, consisting of:
-Limited Government
-A Balanced Budget
-Sensible Government Programs
He's also in favor of a pro-growth, tax-cutting philosophy.
"Lets start with the biggest, personal income tax," Doheny says. "I'm unequivocally interested in reducing that tax. With the eventuality of getting to something like a flat tax. So we won't have so much overhead and all the administrative burden that comes with our tax system. To make it fair, simple and make it economically productive for the country."
Doheny says he'll use his private sector background to bring fiscal responsibility to Washington. He says government spending must be cut.
"It's just common sense, you don't need a magic wand to let people know you can't spend more than you take in," Doheny said. "Also, we need to get back to the core functions of government. The government can not be all things to all people...to realize the private sector can do many of these things much better.
Doheny will have to beat out the runner up in last November's special election, Doug Hoffman, for the nomination. Hoffman surged as a third-party candidate last year, knocking Republican Dede Scozzafava out of the race and almost defeating Democrat Bill Owens on election night.
The 23rd District is almost 15,000 square feet and cover at least parts of 11 counties.
