Brennan officially announces candidacy for Herkimer Family Court Judge

ILION, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Republican endorsed candidate for Herkimer County Family Court Judge has officially announced his campaign for the job.

John Brennan officially announced his bid for Family Court judge at Francesca's Banquet Facility in Ilion on Wednesday. Brennan, a Little Falls resident, has already received the endorsement of the Herkimer County Republican Committee and said his more than 20 years of experience serving local supreme court judges as a law clerk and legal assistant makes him more than suitable for the job.

"If you look at the court system as a hospital, family court is an emergency room," Brennan said. "And you need someone innovative, with the energy and the experience to tend to these families in crisis."

It is the first time in more than 20 years that the Family Court judge race has been contested after the seat becomes vacated by retiring Judge Henry Laraia. Laraia has reached the mandatory retirement age of 70.

"There's nothing bigger than family," Brennan said. "And it is the most important unit and institution that we have in this country. Though, having worked in my community, involved in my community, I'm prepared to understand the needs of my community. And that's why I think this job is the single most important job in the county of Herkimer."

Also running for the position are Democrat Mary Iocovozzi and Steven Getman, who is also looking for the Republican nomination in the primary.

The primary vote for Family Court Judge will take place on September 15, with the general election day on November 2.
