Brown endorses Masucci for Sheriff; Townsend: "I was expecting this"

ROME, N.Y (WKTV) - A candidate for Oneida County Sheriff has picked up a key endorsement. City of Rome Mayor James Brown has announced that he's throwing his support behind the city's Public Safety Commissioner Jim Masucci.

Brown says Masucci has both the attitude and the experience to take over as the county's next sheriff. Republican primary opponent Dave Townsend has already received the backing of the Oneida county Republican Committee. Despite that, Brown says he's confident in his choice, " I have to look at the individual that I feel can do the best job and in my mind, the endorsed candidate is not the best individual to take over the sheriff's department. Jim Masucci is the right person," Brown said.

Townsend responded to Wednesday's endorsement, saying since Brown hired Masucci as Public Safety Commissioner, he was expecting this endorsement.

Townsend meanwhile also has the backing of the New York State Federation of Police and former candidate and current sheriff's Captain Richard Antanavige.

On the Democratic side, Oneida County Corrections Officer Angela Gumbarevic will face off in a September primary against New York Mills Mayor Robert Maciol.
