UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Residents cast their votes nationwide on Tuesday, but many here at home voting at the North Utica Senior Center who talked about what inspires them to exercise their democratic right.

There had been a steady stream of voters at the center throughout the morning and election officials say they expect to see continued traffic throughout the day because presidential elections typically bring out more voters.

Each person had a different reason for coming out to the polls, passionate about the issues as well as the candidates.

"It's the only thing that is free in this country is the right to vote," said Michael Maloney, of Utica, who comes out for every election he can. "I became a U.S. citizen in 1956 and voted in every election I was qualified to vote in.

"I believe people should get out there and do what they need to do for their country," said Joe Esper of Utica. "That is why I came out and voted.

"If you don't vote, you have no right to complain when things don't go the way you think they are going to go," said Judy Hutchinson of Utica.

"I think voting is important," said Mary Heintz-Farda of Utica. "It is a right of all the citizens and citizens need to get out and vote. Can't complain if you can't get out and vote. So it is important everyone gets to the polls today."

One thing to remember as you vote on Tuesday is that while all of the races, such as the congressional and presidential races are listed on the front side of the ballot, any local or county-wide propositions for your area would be on the back of the ballot.
