Senator Seward: "we need to equalize education aid throughout NYS"

By WKTV News

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - State Senator James Seward was in Herkimer County on Thursday outlining his agenda for 2012.

It's part of his two-day tour of the 51st Senate District, where he's going over last year's successes and challenges, as well as outlining his focus for the upcoming year. While speaking at the Legislative Chambers of the Herkimer County Office Building in the Village of Herkimer on Thursday, Senator Seward said he wants more economic development initiatives, mandate relief and to equalize education aid throughout the state.

"Wealthy areas of the state, they have all kinds of frills in their education programs, we are down to the basics in our region and we cant cut back anymore without seriously hurting our students," Senator Seward said.

Seward says he also hopes the governor addresses Medicaid in his proposed budget and that the state removes the huge burden of Medicaid costs from local governments such as Herkimer County.
