Carpenter officially announces run for Herkimer County District Attorney

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - This November, a special election will be held to determine who will become the next district attorney in Herkimer County.

Jeff Carpenter has been filling the position since the start of the year, but now he intends to make it official. Carpenter, who grew up in Herkimer, announced his candidacy at the Waterfront .Grille in Herkimer on Monday afternoon.

In 2002, he was asked by former District Attorney John Crandall to become a prosecutor for the D.A's office. Crandall took over as a Herkimer County Judge in January.

Since the Governor chose not to appoint someone to the position, Carpenter, who was already an Assistant D.A., became acting District Attorney.

Carpenter says his ten years as an Assistant D.A. have prepared him for the job.

"I'm running for Herkimer District Attorney because I truly believe in the honor and the integrity of the position," Crandall said. "Your district attorney needs to posses the qualification. There is, quite simply, no time for on the job training when it comes to being district attorney of Herkimer County."

Also running for the post is Attorney Mary Iocovozzi, who announced her candidacy on April 3.
