Extension granted to Herkimer County Jail through February 2012

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Herkimer County Jail has been given an extension on a variance that will allow the county to keep the facility in operation into mid-February.

Herkimer County Sheriff Christopher Farber stated that he has received notice form the New York State Commission of Corrections that his request for an extension for the recreation area at the jail has been granted.

The extension period for the variance is 90 days, which is February 15, 2012.

Sheriff Farber said that he will have to apply for another extension of the variance by December 8, 2011, which would be 45 days prior to the January meeting of the Commission, when the variance will be reviewed for extension.

According to the Sheriff, the extension of the variance will allow the county "to house the normal amount of inmates in the current jail." If the county had not received the extension, the amount of inmates that could be housed at the facility would be reduced to four, by the state.
