Herkimer County applying for grant for historic jail renovations

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - At a special session Thursday morning of the Herkimer County Legislature, a decision was made regarding the Historic 1834 Herkimer County Jail on North Main Street in Herkimer.

The not-for-profit group called Friends of Historic Herkimer have fought to restore the building for historical purposes.

Several years ago, the interior was renovated, and the group holds its meetings there, along with other community functions. On Thursday, the legislature voted unanimously in favor of applying for a $163,000 state grant from the New York State Parks and Recreation Office to work on the outside.

A spokesperson for the Friends of Historic Herkimer says that if the state funding is approved, the exterior renovations would begin next June.
