Herkimer County looking at possible new developer for jail

By GARY LIBERATORE

HERKIMER, N.Y. (WKTV) - The saga involving the proposed new Herkimer County Jail is about to take a trip south, literally.

The proposed site is still being fought over in court between the village of Herkimer and Herkimer County.

The village tried to stop the county from building on the former P&C property on Route 28, citing zoning and utility hookup issues. The county sued and won, but an appeal by the village is still being looked into.

Meanwhile, another builder, Goldberg Group Architects has come in with an estimate of about half the cost of the original builder, LaBella Associates.

Later this month, two legislators are going to Georgia to look at Goldberg's recent construction on an all-steel jail, instead of the normal concrete ones which are built here in New York State.

"They're giving us half the product too and half the size," said Herkimer County Legislative Chairman Vincent Bono. "We had to decide whether to go that route. Is it efficient, is it safe? It's not just the criminal element that we are worried about. We have employees of the county that have to work in the facility, a small facility."

Bono says the legislature plans to hold a meeting regarding the jail after the two legislators come back from Georgia.
