HERKIMER COUNTY, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Village of Herkimer's Deputy Mayor has announced that he is formally running for the Herkimer County Legislature's First District.

Gary Hartman, who has been a Herkimer Village Trustee and Deputy Mayor since 1999, has announced that he has been endorsed by the Democrat and Working Families parties and will also appear under the Independent "Open Door Party: line.

Hartman is running on a platform to open the county government process to the public and get their input on discussion and decisions and is advocating for the caucus doors to be open to the public and the media.

"I am convinced that we must change the culture of the legislature from one that shuns open discussion and constituent involvement, to one that makes decisions in public & welcomes constituents with open arms," Hartman said. "That change in culture would go a long way to resolving any issue that county government must address. I have shown my commitment to open government and public participation throughout my many years of public service. Together we can open the door to county government. Residents throughout the county are hungry for a county government consisting of representatives that will welcome their input and be open and honest with them."

Hartman will be running against incumbent First District Legislator John Piseck, who is running on the Republican, Conservative and Independence lines.

"I will strongly advocate for the Republican Caucus doors to be open to the public and the media. The Democrat caucus doors have been open for some time," Hartman said.
