Unions reach agreement and avoid layoffs in Sauquoit Valley School District

SAUQUOIT, N.Y. - The Sauquoit Valley Teachers Association and the Sauquoit Valley Non-Teaching Association have reached agreements with the Sauquoit Valley School District that provides the District substantial cost savings for the 2011-2012 school year.

The combined cost savings equal several hundred thousand dollars and involve concessions in wages and health insurance.

The unions both opened their contracts one year early to assist the District following massive state aid cuts.

For the Teachers Association this assistance marks the second time in the last three years that they have given substantial concessions to help the District during difficult budgeting. Prior to the 2009-2010 school year the Teachers Association gave back a 2.5% raise and took no raise for 2009 and 2010.

These concessions have allowed the District to avoid laying off any teachers and retain one custodian who would have been laid off.

Details of these Agreements will be shared with the public tonight at the Sauquoit Valley School Board Meeting at 7:00 p.m. at the Sauquoit Valley High School.
