DiNapoli sticking with Stringer over Spitzer

By WKTV News

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, once the target of headline-grabbing criticism from Eliot Spitzer, says current Spitzer foe Scott Stringer has the temperament, vision and qualifications to be New York City's comptroller.

DiNapoli says he'll leave it to voters to decide if Spitzer is qualified for the job.

DiNapoli continues to endorse Stringer, the Manhattan borough president, in the Democratic primary.

In 2007, then-Gov. Spitzer called DiNapoli "thoroughly and totally unqualified" for the job when the Legislature appointed the veteran Democratic assemblyman to succeed disgraced Comptroller Alan Hevesi.

Spitzer's opposition to DiNapoli began a fight marked by gridlock with the Legislature.

Spitzer has since said DiNapoli has been doing a good job as state comptroller.

His campaign had no initial comment Wednesday.
