Nearly 140 workers let go at Mohawk Valley Psychiatric Center

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Several employees of the Mohawk Valley Psychiatric Center have contacted NEWSChannel 2 by phone, saying that nearly 140 workers at the center were let go on Tuesday.

Earlier this year, we learned of the state's plan to close some wards and move the patients to Syracuse. On Tuesday, those cuts reportedly took effect, with the nearly 140 workers having their last day.

State Senator Joseph Griffo has asked the New York State Office of Mental Health to justify the closures. When reached Tuesday night, Senator Griffo was unaware that the layoffs had taken place that day and said he would be making some phone calls first thing Wednesday morning to find out why the state is moving forward with the cuts.
