Statement from NYS Petroleum Council on 2013 State of the State

By WKTV News

The following is a statement from Executive Director Karen Moreau, Executive Director of the NYS Petroleum Council:

“Governor Cuomo has provided strong leadership for New York that has restored public confidence in Albany, but we all agree that more must be done to rebuild the economy of our State.

“The State of the Southern Tier, by all objective analysis, is not strong; rather, it is struggling. For example, Broome County and Tioga County now have the fewest private sector jobs than they have had in more than 20 years, according to state Labor Department numbers. Family farms are struggling, small businesses are fighting to stay afloat and population is in decline, leaving whole communities at risk. That is the hard truth the Southern Tier faces, but it doesn't need to be its future.

“Safe natural gas development will provide thousands and thousands of good jobs throughout the Marcellus Shale, drive millions in revenues for local governments and school districts, and create even more spin off jobs for small business entrepreneurs.

“We know hydraulic fracturing can be done safely, protecting land, water and public health because it is happening across the country. We remain confident the Governor recognizes the need to move forward with safe natural gas development, and respect his timeline. But there is no question that for the State of the Southern Tier to be as strong as the people there deserve, hydraulic fracturing is the clear answer.”
