UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Congressman Richard Hanna received recognition on Monday for his support of local small businesses.

SCORE, a national volunteer organization that helps people start their own business, honored the congressman with the 2012 Congressional Champion award. He was thanked for being a mouth piece for local entrepreneurs.

SCORE believes that local businesses are the foundation of the greater Utica region.

"We know today that all net new jobs are created by start-ups and small businesses are really the heartbeat of the communities that they serve," said SCORE CEO Ken Yancey. "They are the ones that are there working and providing the value that are supporting the community the local non-profits are a critical component of our economy."

SCORE used to be an acronym for Service Corps of Retired Executives, but is now simply referred to as SCORE.

Nine million entrepreneurs have been helped since 1964.

Congressman Hanna is being challenged by Democrat Dan Lamb in November's election.
