UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Plans for this year's Utica Mayoral Gala were unveiled on Thursday morning, including the announcement that Utica Safe Schools is the non-profit recipient of the gala's proceeds. Organizers say the recent tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut puts an emphasis on school safety and Utica Safe Schools has provided the resources to help fund the School Resource Officer program through the Utica Police Department. It's the largest group of school resource officers in the state outside New York City. "It's never been a more critical time to make this a safe place for our kids," said Anne Lansing, Executive Director of Utica Safe Schools. "This provides a physically safe environment, supports a physically safe environment in the school and provides social emotional sports to students." This year's gala will be held March 23 at the Radisson Hotel in Utica.
