UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Controlled Waste Systems, Inc, (CWSI) will temporarily move most of its operations to the City of Utica's Department of Public Works Garage, the city's mayor said Wednesday.
"The City of Utica has an obligation to the residents of the Belle Avenue neighborhood and CWSI," said Utica Mayor Robert Palmieri. "Both have been put in a difficult position that has gone on for far too long and that is not of their making."
The company's presence on Belle Ave in Utica has been a source of consternation for area residents, who have complained for years about the noise and smells of having the operation in their neighborhood.
"Beginning immediately, the bulk of CWSI's activities will be relocated to the Department of Public Works Garage on Wurz Avene," Mayor Palmieri said. "This action will provide a local employer with the ability to conduct business while restoring Belle Avenue's quality of life."
Palmieri said that the relocation was only to be a short-term action until CWSI moves into permanent quarters later in the year.
"This may only be a stop-gap action but it's an important step forward," Palmieri said." Heavy truck traffic, loud noise, and any other condition the neighbors find objectionable will be significantly decreased."
The waste hauler will still house its corporate offices and a limited maintenance facility at its current location.
"The City of Utica will continue to seek a timely and amicable solution that is responsive to CWSI and the people living in the Belle Ave neighborhood," Palmieri said.
