Utica employees find paycheck amount withdrawn from bank accounts instead of deposited

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Dozens of City of Utica employees got an unpleasant surprise when they went to check their online banking on payday Friday morning.

Not only were their paychecks not deposited, but the exact amount of their paychecks was deducted from their accounts. This apparently happened to all city employees who have direct deposit for their paychecks.

Staff in the city comptroller's office say it doesn't appear to be an error on their end, and that Bank of America has put in what's called a 'research request' to see how this happened, and most importantly, where the money that was deducted from all the accounts actually went.

"We are aware of the issue and are helping our client resolve it," is all Bank of America Spokesperson T.J. Crawford would say.

As of late morning, staff in the city comptroller's office said the bank was starting to reverse the errors and replace the deducted paychecks and that after that was complete, the bank would deposit the paycheck amounts.

It's not clear how many city employees are affected.
