UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Utica Post 229 honored a Utica firefighter and a paramedic at their annual award ceremony Thursday.

Firefighter Brian Bova was awarded paramedic of the year, recognized for his bravery in removing and treating a victim trapped in a house fire and firefighter Joseph Puleo received the firefighter of the year award where he was cited for his community service and fire prevention efforts.

"We feel like we should honor our first responders," said Paul Wojcik of Utica Post 229. "They're the first ones to jump into danger, they're the first to help someone out and we feel they should be recognized, whether they're policemen, firefighters or paramedics."

Utica post 229 has been hosting the ceremony honoring local first responders for over 40 years. They honor top firefighters every fall and police officers in the spring.
