DEERFIELD, N.Y. (WKTV) - A child was taken to the hospital after a horse and buggy collided with a tractor trailer on Tuesday morning.

It was shortly before 10 a.m. on Tuesday morning when the accident occurred at the intersection of North Gage Road and Route 8 in Deerfield.

According to New York State Police Captain Francis Coots, the horse drawn wagon being operated by 12 year old, Jonathan U. Byler and 10 year old Isaac U. Byler,, from Poland was traveling south on the west shoulder of State Route 8 in the Town of Deerfield, attempting to make a left turn onto N. Gage Rd. when it turned into the path of a tractor-trailer, also traveling south, being operated by John R. Silvernail, age 50, from Fort Plain.

The tractor trailer struck the horse and the wagon became airborne, overturned, and came to rest in the Northbound lane.

The horse was euthanized at the scene by the owner.

Barrett H. Sheppard, age 12, who was a passenger in the wagon was transported by Kuyahoora Ambulance to St. Elizabeth's Hospital and later transferred to SUNY Upstate Medical Center for treatment of a skull fracture and brain hemorrhaging, reported to be non-life threatening.

State Police say Silvernail, who was not hurt, did everything he could to avoid them, but struck the horse and buggy.

No tickets have been issued at this point and authorities say the investigation is beginning into the accident.

State Police were assisted on the scene by Kuyahoora Ambulance, Poland Fire Department, and the Oneida County Sheriff's Department.
