Deceased public safety officials honored at annual ceremony

By KATRINA SMITH

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - The job of those who serve the public has changed quite a bit over the years.

On Friday, police officers and firefighters who have served but now passed were honored - a tradition for the past 30 years in the City of Utica.

Family members of the deceased attended the ceremony at the Parkway Recreation Center. Those family members know all too well the sacrifices that are made by those who promise to protect and serve the public.

"Both jobs have changed because the world has changed," said Michael Elefante, President of the Association of Police and Fire Retirees. "There are so many things concerning what is going on in the world, concerning safety within the small community, happening."

Four police officers were honored Friday - Vincent Cerro, Robert E. Scully, Charles Januck, Steven Roczen.

Three firefighters who have passed were also honored - Bernard J. Gigliotti and Lenard Millbower.
