Fire crews respond to blaze on Riverside Drive
UTICA, N.Y (WKTV) - A man escaped any serious injury following a house fire on Riverside Drive in Utica on Tuesday afternoon.
The fire broke out just after 1 p.m. with heavy smoke visible throughout the area.
The house was being rented by a man and a woman, although the woman was not at home at the time of the fire. The man who was at home at the time came running out of the house as a police officer was passing by and was alerted to the situation. The officer then called the fire in.
It took 22 members of the Utica Fire Department about an hour to put out the flames.
The Assistant Fire Chief said there were some challenges for the firefighters.
"There was a lot of fire and it was an older house, said Assistant Fire Chief George Clark of the Utica Fire Department. "A lot of additions, it was cut up inside. We were inside and out a couple of times and it was just in foreign spaces we couldn't get to initially."
The home is a total loss.
Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the fire.
The Red Cross is assisting the couple.
