Firefighters investigating cause of pub fire in Rome
ROME, N.Y. (WKTV) - The building that used to hold the up and coming new restaurant, The Griff, burned down early Wednesday morning, leaving only the "Cans and Clams" sign out front by midday.
The fire was smoldering into the early afternoon, leaving firefighters still hard at work.
Massive amounts of water were poured onto the site, which has had many different names throughout the years, including Coco's and Myron's.
James Magnanti, the owner of the Adirondack 13 Pines Motel next door for 30 years, said he woke up during the night and all he could see was an orange glow.
Rome Fire Chief Ron Brement says he and his crews had a very long night.
"It was a major fire for us as far as when we got here," Chief Brement said. "The heavy involvement of the fire alone, at that point, we were looking for exposures to make sure everything was protected."
The fire only caused a minor injury for one of the firefighters, but fortunately, no one else was hurt.
The investigation continues and fire officials say they are working to determine the cause.
