MONTAGUE, N.Y. (WKTV) - A Holland Patent man is in critical condition following an ATV accident in Lewis County on Thursday.

The Lewis County Sheriff's Office responded to an unresponsive non-breathing male that they say had just been involved in an ATV accident around 2:17 p.m. Thursday on Liberty Road in the Town of Montague.

According to the Sheriff's Office, Timothy Cowen, 48, of Holland Patent was traveling north on Liberty Road with a group of friends when he attempted to pass another ATV and, for unknown reasons, went off the west side of the roadway.

Authorities said he Cowen continued off the roadway for roughly 380 feet before striking a tree limb.

The Sheriff's Office states that the helmet Cowen was wearing was not DOT approved and came off of him upon impact. After Cowen was ejected, authorities said the ATV started flipping end over end for another 21 feet before coming to rest in a shallow creek.

Cowen sustained a severe head injury as well as internal injuries. He was treated at the scene by Lewis County Search and Rescue and flown to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse by Mercy Flight where he is listed in critical condition.

Deputies state that speed was the contributing factor in the accident and the investigation is still ongoing.
