House likely a total loss, family cat missing after Vernon fire

VERNON, N.Y. (WKTV) - A house in the Town of Vernon is likely a total loss, officials say, following a fire late Thursday morning.

Officials say the flames originated in the back of the house, but how the fire began is still under investigation.

Seven fire departments responded to the scene on Carrick Road just after 11 a.m. on Thursday.

There was no one home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.

However, the family says they have not been able to find their cat since the fire.

Vernon firefighters say the rural location made fighting the flames difficult and they had to truck the water in to the private road.
