ROME, N.Y. (WKTV) - Authorities say a 93 year old woman has been killed in a fire at a Rome apartment building.

Fire officials say the fire was reported around 3:11 p.m. on Monday at Rose Garden Apartments on Black River Boulevard in the city of Rome. Crews found moderate smoke upon arrival.

Officials say the blaze was confined to one apartment in the six-unit building. Fire crews were able to quickly extinguish the blaze.

On Tuesday morning, authorities identified the victim as 93 year old Virginia Johnson. According to Assistant Fire Chief Terence Miller, a resident in another apartment was alerted by his smoke detector, kicked in Johnson's door in an attempt to save her, but was unable to due to heavy smoke.

Residents in five other apartments were temporarily displaced but are now back in.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation and the Assistant Fire Chief said the cause of death will be determined upon autopsy results.
