RecruitNY looking for volunteer firefighters
By NEWSChannel 2 Staff

CHADWICKS, N.Y. (WKTV) - Volunteer fire departments across the state, are looking for new members and hope a big recruitment drive next weekend will help.

It's an effort to coincide with National Volunteer Week and FASNY (The Firemen's Association of the State of New York) says that membership has suffered over the last few years.

Willowvale Fire Chief Jim Kuhn says there is a lot planned, including an exercise that shows how to leave the upstairs of a home without using the stairs or front door.

The purpose of the open houses is to show that the job of a volunteer firefighter is rewarding on many levels.

"I've done it all, said Chief Kuhn. "I've seen bad car accidents, I've been in house fires, EMS calls, I've seen it all. There's nothing that I haven't seen yet in 30 years."

Open houses are happening all over the state next weekend on April 27 and 28.

During RecruitNY 2013 weekend on April 27 and 28, fire departments will conduct tours of their firehouses and fire apparatus, allow visitors to try on turnout gear, and provide visitor activities throughout the firehouse.

For area residents looking for more information on the weekend, visit or contact your local fire department.
