MONTAGUE, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a captain for an upstate city fire department has been killed in an off-duty all-terrain vehicle accident in Lewis County.

Public safety officials in Schenectady tell the Daily Gazette that 47-year-old Capt. John Nicol and a friend were riding ATVs in the woods in Lewis County on Monday when Nicol hit a gravel bed and was thrown from his vehicle. The county sheriff's office says Nicol was ejected from his ATV and died of his injuries shortly afterward.

Nicol was a 23-year veteran of the Schenectady Fire Department. He had been a captain since November 2006.
