It's National Law Enforcement Week and Utica Police were honored Friday for their exceptional service in the line of duty.

The 84th annual Police Department Award Ceremony took place Friday, recognizing local heroes for their dedication, outstanding work and honorable service throughout the year. Police Chief Mark Williams said he is very proud of his officers and says this award isn't easy to achieve.

"There's criteria they have to meet and it's a very strict criteria," Chief Williams said. "So when an officer does get recognized formally by the agency, they should be extremely proud because, again, it goes through an awards committee. We screen out the ones that are considered a part of your job and we are looking for an officer that went way beyond the call of duty."
