Utica to host Public Safety Day on October 27

UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) - Local elected officials and emergency personnel spoke to young students at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School in Utica on Monday about the importance of being prepared in case of an emergency.

As part of a community safety campaign, Utica Mayor Robert Palmieri announced "Public Safety Day" to be held October 27 from 11a.m. to 3 p.m. at Utica City Hall, where members of the Utica Police and Fire Departments will be on hand to speak to residents and address any concerns.

The event is free and open to the public.

"You are going to have kids there and they are going to ask questions at a level of what does a fireman do, what does a policeman do, but more importantly, as a parent, you have questions at the same time," said Mayor Palmieri.

Local fire officials also put on a kid-friendly presentation for students on Monday. Dressed in costume, they spoke about the importance of checking fire detectors, cleaning out chimneys, and having emergency escape plans.
