NELSON, N.Y. (WKTV) - A Vernon Center man is dead following a logging accident Friday morning in the Town of Nelson.

According to the Madison County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to 4188 Route 20 near the intersection of Larson Road in Nelson at roughly 11 a.m. on Friday for a report of a man trapped under a tree. The accident scene was approximately 1/8 mile into the woods behind the residence at that location.

Authorities said the victim, Matthew J. Stevens, 22, of Vernon Center, was transported by CAVAC Ambulance to Community Memorial Hospital in Hamilton, where he was pronounced dead.

According to the Sheriff's Office, Stevens, along with three other individuals, was logging on private property, with permission, when Stevens attempted to pull down a tree, approximately 82 feet in height, with a chain attached to a tractor. Authorities said when the tree was pulled, it fell on top of the tractor with Stevens sitting behind the wheel. The tree was in close proximity to another tree that interfered with it falling behind the tractor, and redirected its path over the tractor.

Morrisville Fire Department responded and assisted on the scene along with the New York State Police.

Stevens was transported to the Onondaga County Medical Examiner's Office in Syracuse for an autopsy.
