Crews return to scene of Fairfield barn fire

By JOLEEN FERRIS

FAIRFIELD, N.Y. (WKTV) - A raging overnight barn fire was still smoldering around Noon on Hardscrabble Road in the Town of Fairfield on Monday.

Some dairy cows were unable to make it out of the burning barn.

The remains of the grand, three-story, roughly 125 year old barn were still smoking, 12 hours after the fire started. Some of the dairy cows lucky enough to have made it out alive and were staying close to the burning remains. Others weren't so lucky.

Robert and Donna Murphy own the farm and their daughter says they are not sure how many cows they lost in the fire. It was a truly sad day for the family. Robert Murphy was raised on the farm and took it over from his parents. Their daughter says the Murphys have insurance, but she doubts the roughly 125 year old structure can be replicated.

Fire officials have told the Murphys not to call them unless the small areas of flames reach a certain height. At this point, officials said the fire just has to burn itself out.

The Middleville Fire Department is investigating and says that while the origin of the fire is undetermined it is not suspicious.
