Investigation into suspicious fires at former Duofold factory

ILION, N.Y. (WKTV) - Officials are currently looking into who set multiple fires throughout the old Morgan Duofold factory in Ilion on Wednesday.

The call came in at 4:20 p.m. Wednesday and once inside the former factory, firefighters found a minimum of six fires burning at separate locations and floors, Ilion Fire Chief James Trevett said.

The six fires that Trevett was referring to were in a large central building of the former factory complex, and the Chief added that once he conferred with crews in other buildings of the complex, he was sure that number would grow.

Made up of paper and other rubble, two of those fires grew enough that they took out the floors they were burning on, Chief Trevett said.

Once known as Sperry-Rand UNIVAC, the factory was later purchased by Duofold and closed toward the end of the 20th century when owners moved the company to Pennsylvania.

No one was inside the building when firefighters arrived, but Chief Trevett said that the site has had a history of young people breaking inside and using the large floor areas of the factory for skateboarding and other activities.

The fires were intentionally set and are definitely being deemed suspicious, Chief Trevett added.

Now an investigation gets underway between the Ilion Fire and Police Departments to determine who set the fires and why.

The Ilion Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the Ilion Police Department, Herkimer Fire Department, Frankfort Fire Department and the Mohawk Fire Department on standby.
