Substance that caused post office inspection believed to be ice melter

DOLGEVILLE, N.Y. (WKTV) - The Dolgeville Post Office was back open Wednesday following a Hazmat situation a day prior.

Authorities were investigating after an employee of the Dolgeville Central School District went to pick up the mail on Tuesday and came into contact with a white substance and experienced a burning sensation on her hands. After seeing the school nurse, authorities were contacted and an inspection of the post office was launched.

According to Herkimer County Emergency Services, it is believed that the white substance that caused the burning sensation was caused by a calcium product used to melt ice on the sidewalks.

However, that has not been confirmed because there wasn't enough material to sample.
