Authorities step up STOP-DWI efforts for Independence Day

By WKTV News

The Independence Day holiday falls on a Wednesday this year, and that means a rather lengthy effort by law enforcement to step up DWI patrols.

The crackdown began on Friday, as it's the weekend before the holiday, and will continue through the end of next weekend.

Local, county and state police will all be out looking for drunk drivers as this holiday is, historically, the deadliest holiday when it comes to impaired driving.

"Over the years, obviously we've seen a decline in fatalities, in accidents where the driver is intoxicated," said Sgt. Richard Misterka of the New York State Police. "So, I mean, that's the goal, and it's working and so long as it's working, we'll continue to do it."
